The key ability I needed was for a monitor that could report on what was happening on the serial port without opening the port itself; it allows a software application on your PC connect to a piece of hardware attached to the (virtual or physical) serial port and can capture the whole conversation. This makes troubleshooting your own applications and reverse engineering very old applications that use serial to be rebuilt. The GUI was extremely intuitive and I didn't need to spend ages looking at documentation - I fired up the program and within a minute had connected to the right serial port and was capturing data. > > **Inconvénients**: In the time I've been using SPM, there are no particular improvements I can think of. The software is absolutely thorough, everything I wanted to do I found a way to achieve easily just by looking at the menus. > > Moving my development laptop to Windows 11 broke an application that I use really frequently - RealTerm. Serial Port Monitor was one of a dozen or so alternatives that I tried to replace the functionality I need, specifically that it's able to capture full serial port traffic (both user data and port management changes like port configuration, listening events, etc) without having exclusive ownership of the serial port. This means that another program on the PC can "open" the serial port and access the device while SPM invisibly captures all the data passing back and forth. For my personal needs, I use this both to test and troubleshoot my own code by watching what is happening at a very low level of detail without having to add large amounts of debug \& diagnostic logging. I have also used it to reverse engineer an old serial receipt printer; it was attached to a very old PC (running Windows XP) and the manufacturer had gone out of business long ago, so I was asked to see if I could develop a modern driver to still access the printer. SPM allowed me to rapidly (within a couple of days) develop and test that driver, which would have probably taken me 2-3x longer if I'd had to debug the code by hand. SPM has a slick, modern UI and so far has been completely reliable. It just does it's thing and works.
