The fact that I can run Kirby and, without hours of training, my customers can add their own content, update their websites \& make changes without breaking the site, is the main selling-point here. Unlike other, bigger, CMS systems, Kirby is easily understood by people whose day-job isn't working with websites, but who simply want their business to have a well-working page on the web. Upkeep \& Maintainance is also a breeze and it's nice not having to worry about critical bugs, database issues, etc. every single day for every client I work with. > > **Inconvénients**: Kirby's featureset is probably not suitable for large websites \& website's that need a slew of interactive functionality. I love the fact that working without a database and with just a few dependencies I can focus on build websites, instead of fixing annoying problems. Moreover, composer and the code base structure make it well organised and easy to understand. Another key point is the ability to create the administration panel with a freedom that I haven’t experienced in others products like it., The UI of the panel is clean and perfect: it is clearly the product of a design focused developer. I love the idea that a website should not only come with a custom template but also a custom-tailored backend that can shrink and expand with a client’s needs. The documentation is outstanding. That flat file approach is groundbreaking and beats any database for all but the most complex enterprise needs. The new block editor makes for a fantastic writing experience superior to WordPress’ Gutenberg editor. Again, the concept is to customice everything and only offer blocks which are supposed to used in the template instead of just creating a big blob of markup. Kirby never gets in the way, but it is there when you need it (most of the time). > > **Inconvénients**: Unfortunately, Kirby lacks some features I require for most of my projects. There is no native support for comments or any kind of forms to support user generated content. It is possible to add this functionality manually, of course, but it would probably require quite some time and might break in the future. This is what happened with a third-party comments plugin and illustrates why such vital features should be part of the core. I would also like to see centralised asset management and the possiblity to perform updates from the backend. Another issue for me is pricing. Besides the initial purchasing price, there will be an additional fee for each major upgrades. At the same time, older version will only be maintained with security updates for so long. While I fully understand the creators’ need to find a sustainable business model which allows Kirby to survive and grow, recurring fees are a dealbreaker for me when it comes to developing websites which don’t generate any money. It would be hard to explain to potential clients why they should pay only to keep their website secure when there is plenty of open source software out there which offers free updates. > > I came across Kirby on my mission to find a replacement for WordPress as my go-to CMS. After testing it for some time, I arrived at the conclusion that it might be perfect for portfolio sites, storefronts and micropages.
